C. 28782 FRIDAY, AUGUST 29, 1980 Price 10c Per Cop.' Weather Wednesday: high 87, low 59. It’s perfect for outside activities. An extortionist bomb exploded Wednesday at Harvey’s Resort Hotel-Casino at Stateline, Nevado. The bomb, reportedly containing 1,000 sticks of dynamite, went off when bomb squad members were trying to “render it safe” by remote- control, using a robot. Extensive damage was done to the hotel. The extortionists had not been heard from since early Tuesday when they left a note demanding $3,000,000. The News Leader in Landrum reports that rabid bats have been found near Landrum High School. Polish strike leaders said Wednesday the government has agreed to the creation of independent trade unions, a major demand of strikers who have paralyzed the Baltic coast for two weeks. Thursday’s Charlotte Observer had an article by Robin Clark on Editor Mike O’Neal of the Thermal Belt News Journal. Robert (nee Joan Stoudenmire) of Charlotte, are the parents of a son, Stephen Alan Robert, II, born August 24 at Charlotte Memorial Hospital. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Marion Roberts of Charlotte. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. H. 0. Stoudenmire of Lake Lanier. Maternal great grandparents are Helen M. Gray of Tryon and L. D. Gray of Eustis, Fla. A New Arrival Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Hicks (Carol Ann McAbee) of Doraville, Ga. are parents of a daughter, Allison Leigh, born August 23, at Northside Hospital in Atlanta. Maternal grandparents are Mrs. Ben McAbee of Mill Spring and the late Mr. McAbee. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Fred M. Hicks of Bryson City, N. C. Allison has a brother, Andy, who is 3. Rutherford County News A number of high schools in this area open their season tonight. The Tryon Tigers don’t open their season until Sept. 12th. Polk Central at Mitchell The Polk Central Patriots open their season at Spruce Pine tonight at 8 o’clock as they tangle with Mitchell High School. This will be the first game for both schools. Polk Central will be better than last year, but they have their work cut out for them trying to beat Mitchell in its home territory. Mitchell in a close one. Jamboree at Landrum The First Foothills Football Jamboree will be held at Landrum tonight at 8 o’clock. There will be two “half” scrimmages. The first half will be Chapman vs Christ Church and the second half will match Landrum with Jonesville. The scrimmages don't count, but don’t tell that to the players. The Chapman, Jonesville and Lan drum bands will be present for the scrimmages. Open House The Polk County Republican Party will have an open house Sept 6th from 4 to 7 p.m. at their headquarters on Mills Street in Columbus. Activity Day In Landruim The Landrum Rescue Squad and the Landrum Fire Department are planning an Activity Day, Sept. 6th at Palmetto Field in Landrum. All proceeds for the day will be shared by the two organizations to purchase equipment. The Fire Dept, needs money for a water truck and the Rescue Squad is getting a life pack. Individuals having any items to donate to the flea market should contact any fireman or member of the rescue squad. The Activity Day will begin at 10 a.m. and there will be kiddy rides, dunking machines, and games. There will be a rock & roll band from 2 to 6 and square dancing at 7 p.m. with cake walks. Barbecue will be served during the day. Paper Drive Polk Central Band Boosters Club is having a paper drive, through Sept. 19. Everyone is asked to save their papers. They may be carried to the Band Room at Polk Central. Patriot Boosters Polk Central Boosters will meet Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. a ( the high school. A spokesman said that this is an important meeting. Everyone is invited.
